The closing date for entries for this year’s Splash relay swim event has now closed, with many last-minute entries flowing in.
Teams from schools, clubs and community swimmers have come forward, all eager to play their part to raise vital funds for Splash charities world wide.
Splash organisers are keen that the 2013 swim on Saturday, September 28, the 24th since 1990, should be the most successful ever.
To date, swimmers of all ages have raised around £160,000 from generous Tayside firms and the unfailing support of Angus people in Kirriemuir, Forfar and every corner of the county.
Each swim team is allocated a sponsored lane for 25 minutes and challenged to swim as many lengths as their skill allows. Most junior schools manage a score of 60 or 70 and the unbroken 2009 distance record of 138 lengths is held by club athletes Dundee Aquatics Swimming Club.
Can this amazing record ever be beaten? Only time will tell!
A fun-filled running commentary and poolside interviews will be relayed to spectators by the inimitable John Neeson - now a head teacher in Dundee but of recent memory in Kirriemuir Primary Schools! Webster’s’ lifeguards will provide safety cover for the expected 320 competitors during an afternoon of frenzied excitement spurred on by their supporters. A spokesman said: “We have been astonished by the enthusiastic response of the thousands of local folk who have made Splash such a huge success and all the businesses, large and small who have gifted money to the event. The committee also gratefully acknowledges the unfailing editorial support of our local press, whose invaluable professional publicity has been key to the swim’s popularity. Splash officials and helpers are volunteers so all funds collected go directly to nominated charities. Our 2013 main sponsors are Guild Homes (Tayside) Ltd, and each year Kirriemuir Rotary Club with over 40 Kirriemuir and Forfar firms pledge cash -too many to list now - but probably all the best ones you can think of! We will show you exactly who they are on the big day when you come along to enjoy the fun.”
Splash is organised by Kirriemuir St Andrew’s, St Anthony’s, St Mary’s and Glens and Old Parish Churches.
