Jute industry tales

SANDRA Thomson and David Wilkie gave a sterling performance at the Forfar and District U3A meeting last week.

David gave an insight into how the bringing together of Dundee’s engineering, whaling and weaving skills laid the foundation for its world renowned jute industry.

Sandra’s knowledge of the jute industry and its products was informative and fascinating. Her stories about India, where she was born, were fascinating and at times hilariously funny.

Together Sandra and David told a tale of an industry that has serviced many of society’s needs for centuries. From present day environmentally friendly products and Harry Potter’s mountains by way of jute coffins and shrouds with pockets; not to mention handbags, shopping bags, jewellery and hats.

Seldom have the members been so well entertained.
