WEBSTER’S Sports Centre in Kirriemuir is where the action will be on Saturday, September 24 when the 22nd annual Splash Relay Swim takes to the water.

Entries are being taken now for the swim sessions which will see 40 relay swimmers at a time take the plunge, beginning at 1.30 pm.

Some 360 entrants in 40 teams from every corner of Tayside will create the excitement and fund-raising potential to exceed last year’s amazing cash total of £10,000.

A Splash spokesman said: “As purely local charity events, Splash swims have always enjoyed generous support from local people and many Tayside firms.

“This year more Angus companies than ever have pledged funds and several, like our main sponsor Guild Homes (Tayside) Ltd,, are also raising swimming teams to share in the day’s fun. These organisations, and for many years Kirriemuir Rotary Club’s donations, give Splash fund-raising a vital head start. Our committee of volunteer organisers appreciates their unwavering support, especially in challenging economic times.”

The organisers urge teams to get their entry forms in soon.

Each team of six to eight swimmers is allocated a 25 minute slot to swim as many lengths of the 20 metre pool as their aquatic skill allows. Any mix of ages from six years upwards and any ability can enter. There are trophies for every age group and performance level - schools, community and elite club swimmers who currently hold the outright distance record of 138 lengths in 25 minutes (Dundee Aquatics Swimming Club 2009).

The real purpose of the event, despite the excitement of awesome speed records, is to raise the maximum amount of money for the 2011 charities selected for direct cash support.

Airlie Primary School, whose contribution of £334 was one of last year’s highest donations, has keen swimmers already in training for 2011.

To book your swim lane for Splash 2011 ask for an entry form wherever you see a poster or phone 01575 572819 (Glens and Old Parish Office). To enlist as a commercial lane sponsor and pledge a contribution for 2011 please phone 01575 572129.

Since 1990 the Kirriemuir Splash Community Swims have been organised by volunteers from Kirriemuir St Andrews, St Anthony’s, St Mary’s and Glens and Old Parish Churches. All funds collected are sent directly to chosen charities in Scotland and overseas.

Several of these have also benefited freely from the skills of Kirriemuir and Tayside-based professional people on personal visits. Most are well-established and have enjoyed cash support from Splash for many years.

As well as the main sponsorship from Guild Homes (Tayside ) Ltd, Forfar, there are currently 30 commercial lane sponsors which are listed and promoted at the event.
