How to dig deep into your roots

MEMBERS of Forfar and District U3A enjoyed a talk by Angus Gellatly from the Tay Valley Family History Society last Wednesday.

Gus took members back much further than even their memories stretched.

He demonstrated how anyone would set about tracing their family history and how to catalogue the information.

He emphasised that photos and mementoes were all part of our inheritance.

His insight into the statutory and church records showed how they could reveal astonishing facts about our ancestors.

Gus showed how the spelling of names changed over time and how some facts were not as accurate as they seemed to be. Statements about ages on marriage records were sometimes an area where truth was secondary to vanity.
