NHS Tayside’s Paediatric Overweight Service (POST) is encouraging families to keep active this winter and to have fun with some new indoor sports activities.

The nights are darker and the weather is colder, but remember to keep your children moving and keep the family’s activity levels up. Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day - so don’t hibernate! Ditch the couch and get the whole family active.

Dr Laura Stewart, POST Service Lead said: “It is so easy in the winter months to stop being active. We’d like to challenge the families of Tayside to keep moving this winter and the team has put together some great ideas for family fun.

“Making regular physical activity a part of your daily life is proven to have many health benefits, including helping you maintain to a healthy weight, good bone health and improved cardiovascular health and quality of life. So, take advantage of the cold spell this winter and try out some of the different indoor sports on offer in your local area.

“The POST message is not to be discouraged by the weather, instead get creative and share photos of you and your family getting active on the POST Facebook pagewww.facebook.com/nhstaysidePOST.”

Here are some unusual indoor sport activities to help kick start your fun, fit winter:

Korfball – a ball sport which involves lots of throwing, catching and shooting into a really high basket.

Short tennis - also known as short court tennis or mini tennis. It’s a great way for children to learn the basics of tennis using soft balls, smaller rackets and low nets.

Indoor rock climbing – an exciting way to keep active. Many places offer kids clubs where children can learn the basic skills and make new friends.

Ice skating/ice hockey – show us your moves on the ice!

Martial arts – why not try judo, karate or taekwondo.

But don’t forget the old favourites such as: Swimming; Football; Dancing/gymnastics; Basketball and Badminton.
