Gearing up for biggest and best Relay For Life

Organisers have revealed that the Cancer Research UK Relay For Life Kirriemuir, which will take place at the Kirriemuir Show Ground on the weekend of August 10 and 11, is on track to being Kirrie’s biggest and best yet.

“So far, over 40 teams have entered and, with several more in the pipeline, we’re well on the way to having an incredible 50 teams at this year’s event,” said Keith Hopkins, chair of the CRUK Relay For Life Kirriemuir volunteer committee, organisers of the event in 2007, 2009, 2011 and now 2013.

“As well as pledging to have at least one team member walking or running around the track for the 24 hours of the Relay For Life weekend, the teams are putting so much effort into fund-raising for CRUK, including quiz nights, a sponsored spin-a-thon, race nights, a perfume party and car washing. The team from Thrums Vets even recorded a CD, which is fast becoming a Kirrie best-seller!”

Keith added the committee’s disco in March raised over £4,000 and was so well-received, they have decided to hold a second major fund-raising event - a Sportsmen’s Dinner on June 21 at Kirriemuir Town Hall.

Brian Laing, also a member of the CRUK Relay For Life Kirriemuir volunteer committee, explained that the Sportsmen’s Dinner will include a three course meal, talks by top class after-dinner speakers with a sporting connection, an auction and a raffle.

Tickets costs £35 each and are available from Brian on 07793314409, Rhona Guild (07971 454626), Keith Hopkins (07715052718) or any other committee member.

Brian said: “Tables for 10 or 12 can also be booked, which is a great opportunity for local businesses to, once again, show their support for a very worthwhile cause which has been embraced by the people of Kirriemuir for the last six years.

“Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity and its pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has helped save millions of lives. The money raised by everyone involved in Kirriemuir’s Relay For Life event helps CRUK in its fight against cancer – every step CRUK makes towards beating this disease relies on every pound donated.”

Rhona Guild, volunteer secretary, explained that, as well as the fund-raising events being held by the Relay For Life teams and the volunteer committee, it’s also possible to contribute towards Kirriemuir’s fund-raising efforts for CRUK by handing in empty printer cartridges, copier films and old mobile ‘phones to Paul’s Hairdressers, Bank Street, Kirriemuir or to any of the committee members.

She said: “In addition, although we’re unable to collect bags of unwanted clothes and household goods this year, the CRUK shop in Forfar would appreciate any donations along these lines.

“The money they raise by selling the no-long required items in only three bags could enable three CRUK Cancer Information Nurses to attend a study day to keep their knowledge up-to-date, while the money raised by the contents of 500 bags could cover one year’s running expenses for a project looking at a treatment for a children’s cancer, helping to ensure more children survive cancer in the future.”

Relay For Life Kirriemuir takes place at Kirriemuir Show Ground at East Muirhead of Logie.

It is a unique celebration of life and hope which unites communities to help beat cancer and culminates in a fantastic family and team event. Teams of between eight to 15 people - of all ages are needed to take part.
