Guild hear cook’s tales

SPEAKER at the most recent meeting of the Glens and Kirriemuir Old Guild was former cook Ellen Little who spent her working years at an Angus castle.

Ellen explained that her husband already worked on the estate and she was asked to join the staff when her children went to school. She soon became Cook and as such was an important member of the Downstairs Team.

She kept members enthralled with tales of woe such as when an old fashioned rope food trolley used for taking meals to the nursery crashed to the ground and was soon replaced with an electric lift.

Many famous people passed through in shooting parties such as royals, prime ministers, ambassadors and even a couturier who ended up making curtains and furnishing for his attic bedroom.

Life in the big house was laced with little annoyances like having the decor in your estate house chosen and unannounced visits to check up on the state of your house.

Chris Horrocks gave a vote of thanks.
