Over in Sochi the Team GB Men’s Curling squad have had a succesful start to their Winter Olympic campaign by reaching the semi-finals, writes Chris Sutton.

Team GB won five of their first six matches to be sitting very well placed in the round robin standings, losing only to World Champions Sweden. However, losses to Canada, Norway and China in their final three matches left their hopes in the balance and facing a play-off match to reach the semi-finals.

The squad, which includes Forfar’s own Greg Drummond, lost 6-5 to China on Monday, meaning they had to beat the Norwegians in order to progress to a tie against World Champions Sweden.

Going into the game both Britain and Norway had a five wins to four losses record through the round robin stage of the competition but Norway had the upper hand as they beat the British team 7-6 when they met earlier in the competition.

However, Denmark defeated Norway 5-3 on Monday morning to force them into the play-off against Team GB and the Brits took solace in the fact that they beat Denmark 8-6 in session eight of the round robin tournament.

Up to the Norway fixture the British team matched the performance of the Mens Curlers at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, who had lost in a similar play-off match with Sweden.

The challenging match against Norway took place on Tuesday, February 18, at 5 a.m. Team GB were losing to Norway 5-4 in the last end so a two was needed to win or at least a one to take it to an extra end. But skip David Murdoch scored a two so GB were victorious 6-5.

As the Dispatch and Herald went to press Team GB were preparing to face Sweden in the semi-finals while Canada were set to face China.

The game will be televised live on BBC 2 at 3 p.m. on Wednesday (February 19).
