Forfar runners to take part in national relay

The Real Relay will pass through Brechin, Forfar, Meigle and on to Coupar Angus this Thursday.

The Endurancelife Real Relay is an exciting attempt to follow the entire route of the official Olympic Torch around the British Isles in one continuous non-stop journey.

Starting out from Land’s End at midnight on Monday, May 28, ten days behind the official Olympic Torch, the Real Relay involves hundreds of runners from across the British Isles running through the day and night on an 8,000 mile mission to reach London in time for the Olympic Games opening ceremony.

Three runners from Forfar Roadrunners have the honour of completing the route through Angus.

Donna Pass is due to start around 4.25am from Hillside with the 11.5 miles to Brechin going through Montrose.

Ewen Milne takes over from her about 6.20am, bringing the baton 12 miles to Forfar in time for Jack Davies to complete the next 12 mile leg to Meigle, starting about 8.20am in Forfar.

The Real Relay was not intended to be a ‘rival’ to the official Olympic torch procession, simply an alternative.

An alternative that has its roots wrapped up in the belief that a simple, inspiring and positive idea could take hold and create a wave of support that sweeps ahead and captures people’s imagination.

Propelled by the good will and enthusiasm of each of the runners in the Real Relay so far, the baton continues its journey around the British Isles uninterrupted. In fact now that momentum is building and awareness of the challenge is heightened, the competition for bagging stages is hotting up.

The 8000 mile route is broken down into hundreds of stages mostly of around ten miles in distance but the route will include a number of special stages up to 100 miles in distance. Stages will be added to the table as the relay progresses.

Runners will be required to navigate their own way between the start and finish of their stage. With the only condition being they must go via the communities visited by the official Olympic Torch relay.
