President Susan Oliphant welcomed two members of ‘mother club’, Dundee Inner Wheel, to the February meeting of Forfar Inner Wheel.
This was Forfar Inner Wheel’s 63rd birthday meeting and president Susan invited the Dundee president, Enid Young, to cut the birthday cake which was prepared for the club by Saddlers of Forfar.
The speaker for the evening was Rev. Barbara Ann Sweetin, the minister of the East and Old Church in Forfar.
Barbara Ann is married to husband Billy and they have two grown up children.
Before entering the Ministry she worked for Wimpey Homes.
After a lifelong interest in the Girls’ Brigade, she studied theology in Glasgow and before coming to Forfar was involved in a church in Greenock. Barbara Ann’s talk was entitled ‘Jack of All Trades’ - however members all felt she is in no way ‘master of none’ as the saying goes.
While her main remit is to educate and interpret the Bible for her congregation - the “word and sacrament” - being a minister involves far more than that. A working knowledge of finances, church law, rules and procedures is needed while some boiler maintenance and first aid also come in handy!
She needs to be ready for anything and she had some amusing and enlightening tales to tell of her time here in Forfar.
Baptisms, weddings and funerals are the basis of many a story and Barbara Ann enlightened and entertained members with many a tale, both amusing and poignant.
Of particular fascination to the ladies were her preaching scarves — beautifully embroidered for every season and sacrament in the church year.
Her working week can be up to 65 hours and she has to be very flexible.
With the church open seven days a week and a new HUB having started in the last few days, there’s never a dull moment for Barbara Ann.
Barbara Ann was warmly thanked by Agnes Mackay.
The ladies at the Forfar Inner Wheel were delighted to learn that their recent coffee morning had raised an impressive £820.
Any organisation or charity wishing to receive funding from the Inner Wheel should apply in writing to the president by Friday, March 15.
The president is Susan Oliphant and her address is Ivy Cottage, Benzil, by Forfar.
