A FINAVON based Lathallan pupil is to take centre stage at Pittodrie this Saturday.
Grant Sanderson (13) will be part of the Lathallan Pipe Band’s opening at the stadium, which is playing host to Scotland v Tonga in the final EMC2 rugby test.
The match will be opened for the first time ever by a school pipe band.
The band from Lathallan School, Johnshaven will perform ‘O Flower of Scotland’ with the massed pipes and drums.
Scotland has beaten Canada and Samoa there in recent years and will be aiming for another win in the last game before the 2015 Rugby World Cup draw.
The Lathallan Pipe Band will also be performing a repertoire of pipes and drums to the thousands of visitors arriving at the Richard Donald Stand before the game.
From its origin back in 1958, the Lathallan Pipe Band has benefited hundreds of children from the ages of eight to 18.
They have also represented the school at events such as at the recent Diamond Jubilee event at Glamis, Drumtochty games, the opening the Angus Show, Montrose Armistice Day, and various Johnshaven events. The Band is also invited annually to Burns Suppers and corporate dinners.
Back in 2004, the band played at the opening of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, in 2009 they launched their own CD ‘Blaw na Gael’ and they have a European Tour next year and are planning to enter World Pipe Band Championships in the future.
Richard Toley, headmaster at Lathallan School said: “It is a huge occasion for the band and the school and as you can imagine the castle has heard Flower of Scotland a few times recently!
“It is gratifying to see the efforts of our pupils being rewarded in this way and I cannot wait to see them perform on centre stage.
“We have strong connections with the Scotland squad having welcomed several of them to our Rugby 7s tournament and with many of our pupils enjoying success at regional level we hope to soon see them putting on the Scotland strip.”
Lathallan School’s alumni includes Scottish rugby internationals, Fran ten Bos, ‘The Flying Dutchman’ and Rob Wainwright. Their third Rugby 7s tournament will take place on Saturday, April 23, 2013 welcoming hundreds of players from all over Scotland.
