Rehearsals are well advanced for Tayside Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of 2014 on Saturday, February 8 in the Reid Hall, Forfar.

For this ‘February Favourites’ event the orchestra has chosen an appealing programme of very well-known musical items with a lighter theme.

Included in the programme are ‘Meditation’ from Massenet’s ‘Thais’, part of the Holberg Suite for Strings by Grieg; amusing offerings like Eric Fenby’s ‘Rossini on Ilkla Moor’ and Peter Hope’s ‘Playful Scherzo’ and ‘Mexican Hat Dance’ as well as the ‘Galop’ from ‘Masquerade’ by Khachaturian.

Ron Walker, TSO conductor, said: “I am delighted with the way that rehearsals have gone so far. The players have been practising extra hard as they are aware this concert is in memory of Audrey Brown and they want to do their best for this charming lady who was a stalwart in the orchestra’s cello section for more than 15 years.

“It is pleasing to report that Muriel Dyer, Audrey’s sister and herself a very talented musician, is happy not only to join the orchestra for this special occasion but also to be the soloist in Masasenet’s ‘Thais’, thus paying her own personal tribute. I’m very much hoping that our loyal Angus audience will come along to the concert in droves to enjoy our playing and thus banish some of the winter blues.”

A bus will run from Montrose/Brechin to the Reid Hall. Those interested should contact John Stevenson (01674 830250) as soon as possible.

Tickets are on sale from Toy Castle, Forfar; Hogg’s, High Street, Montrose; any member of TSO/TSO committee or at the door on the evening. Doors open at 6.45 p.m. with the concert starting at 7.30 p.m.
