Fast-food war heating up

THE fast-food war in Forfar is heating up with the lodging this week of an application by the Herbel Restaurant Group for a KFC outlet – directly opposite McDonald’s Restaurant at the Orchardbank Business Park, writes Janet Thomson.

In the last few months national chains Greggs and Subway have opened up branches in the town centre. This week, after months of speculation, Angus Council planners received an application from The Herbel Restaurant Group for the erection of a class 3 restaurant with ancillary drive through, take-away, access, parking and groundworks at plot 1 Sylvie Way.

Whilst the company has said the proposal is at an early stage, they have indicated they hoped to bring between 30 and 40 jobs to what would be their second Angus outlet, following the opening of their Arbroath restaurant earlier this year.

The Forfar site covers 0.3 hectares at the south west gateway to the business park, and across the A94 Forfar-Coupar Angus Road from the McDonald’s outlet at Halfpennyburn – one of the neighbours notified as part of the planning application. The application has been lodged by Glasgow agents DPP on behalf of Belfast-based Herbel Restaurant Group which already has an impressive portfolio of fast food outlets and extensive property interests.

If given the go-ahead, the creation of up to 40 jobs would be another boost for the town following the creation of 230 jobs at the new Asda store which opened at the beginning of last month.
