A Forfar couple have recently returned from the trip of a lifetime in Africa in support of a charity that provides vital transport for medical services.
Ken and Kate Stirling undertook a 620-mile journey through Zambia to help raise funds for Riders for Health.
While Ken joined 12 other motorcyclists on the trip, Kate opted to travel in one of the 4x4 support vehicles for the journey between the capital Lusaka and Livingstone, close to Victoria Falls.
The annual event supports the work carried out by Riders for Health, an international charity which provides reliable, sustainable transport for health workers in some of the world’s remote areas.
Ken said: “One of the biggest problems in Zambia when it comes to accessing health care is a lack of reliable transport. Riders for Health provides transport, such as motorcycles, and trains health workers how to ride and maintain them. This ensures they can reach the most rural communities to run clinics, advise pregnant mothers, and vaccinate children.
Ken and Kate’s route took them south to Monze, where they visited the Munali heritage site with stunning views of the Zambian landscape, then via Lake Kariba and on to the town of Choma.
Ken continued: “Here we were introduced to the work of Riders for Health, and rode out to an outreach health clinic with environmental health technician Mr Nawanawr.
“The following day we rode alongside health worker Howard Saabalenga, as he visited local communities and carried out a vaccination clinic for children under five. Some of the hardest terrain we encountered were the sandy tracks between villages on the rides accompanying these health workers, and they are doing this day in day out.
“One of the highlights of the trip was the sight of the women queuing up outside the clinic to have their babies weighed, some had walked many miles to get there and some had one baby strapped to the back, and one to the front, but still they appeared happy and always smiling.”
