Local MP Mike Weir has given his backing to a national initiative to accurately map real mobile ‘phone reception rates across the UK.

Mr Weir recently attended an event at the House of Commons to promote the initiative, run by the Countryside Alliance.

Supporting the scheme, he pointed out that while everyone pays the same for their mobile ‘phone packages, many people are not getting a good deal.

Mr Weir said: “I know from my own experience of going around Angus that mobile phone coverage in the county can be very patchy, even in the burghs. Many people driving through Angus also find that the main A90 road between Dundee and Aberdeen has many blind spots where there is no signal at all.”

The Countryside Alliance is asking people to download the free RootMetrics app to their smartphones or tablets and use it while they are at home as well as while they are out and about. This tests the strength of their signal and automatically records the result. It can also be used to check which company provides the best service in an area.

The information will be used to make the case to phone companies and the Government to improve mobile reception, especially in rural areas.
