Encouragement for new relay entrants

The Kirriemuir Relay for Life committee is keen to recruit new support for this year’s event to increase its already impressive fund-raising potential.

Organised every second year in aid of Cancer Research UK, the popular event, which this year will be held on August 15-16, turns the Kirrie Show field into an impromptu campsite complete with stages marquees for non-stop entertainment.

While it attracts strong support every year, the committee is hoping to encourage new teams to take part and will be holding a ‘Newbies’ Night’ in Kirriemuir Golf Club at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 23.

Rhona Guild, Relay for Life secretary, said: “We are inviting anyone who is interested in becoming involved with the Relay or in starting their own team to come along. Previous participants will be on hand to talk about their experience of past events and answer questions informally.

“We are hoping that 2015 will be the biggest Relay for Life that Kirrie has ever seen. There are already 29 teams registered to take part this year, and we would love to reach 50 teams!”

Keith Hopkins, committee chairman, also said it is an ideal opportunity for teams to get involved in what is a huge community festival.

He continued: “Teams can have between eight and 15 people, and members take turns walking around the circuit in the middle of the field for 24 hours to raise awareness of cancer and raise funds for the research supported by Cancer Research UK.

“You don’t have to be an athlete, you can be any age, you don’t even have to stay awake all night - but there’s so much going on round about, you might just want to!”

Money raised through Relay For Life funds the work of thousands of scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to saving more lives by preventing, controlling and curing all cancers.

Teams can register online at cruk.org/relay or by telephoning 0300 123 1026 and further information on how to enter is available from Rhona Guild on 07971454626 or by e-mailing rhonaguild@gmail.com.
