Staff at North Street Chip Shop are celebrating after customers voted to bestow on the chippie the honour of having the best chips in Angus.

The popular traditional takeaway was the winner in the Angus category for the national competition that searches for the best chips in the country as part of National Chip Week.

Stuart Atkinson, owner of the North Street Chip Shop, said: “It’s a great endorsement for us and we are chuffed to bits to come top out of all the chip shops in Angus.

“Next year we will be hoping to be the best in Scotland!

“It was a boost for everyone at the shop. We do the same thing week in and week out so it is great to get a bit of recognition for it.”

The North Street Chip Shop is well known in the local area and has often gained recognition for its support of sustainable fishing.

The North Street Chip Shop is one of just 16 chip shops in the UK that is accredited with certified sustainable seafood and it is the only takeaway in Angus accredited with ‘Eat Safe’.

However, this is the first time the chips on offer came under the spotlight.

Stuart continued: “Most of the year we use the best quality British potatoes, apart from a couple of months in the summer when they are no longer available.

“I won’t give away all my secrets but we only use the highest quality and all of our chips and prepared using the best practice right here on the premises.”

The UK winner for the second year running was the Burton Road Chippy while the title of Best Pub and Restaurant Chips went to The Crown at Henlow.

In Scotland the winner was The Wee Kelpie in Fraserburgh.

National Chip Week (held this year between February 17 and 24) aims to celebrate the very best of chip shops across the UK.
