Calls for the cemetery gates to be locked at night.

Calls have been made for the gates to be locked at night and for security cameras to be installed at Newmonthill Cemetery in Forfar after a spate of thefts of ornaments from headstones.

Following our report in last week’s ‘Dispatch’, which gave details of one family’s misery at the hands of callous thieves, a number of readers took to our Facebook page to report similar distressing incidents at the graves of their loved ones.

Those who commented spoke of the distress and upset caused with one stating: “I don’t think people understand how important a grave is to the people who are grieving the loss of loved ones. In my opinion I think it (the cemetery) should have street lighting and cameras.”

Another stated: “Gates should be locked at both ends after a certain time at night.”

In last week’s paper we told of how one family feared their family grave was being targeted deliberately after a number of ornaments were removed during repeated incidents over two years.

Their experiences were echoed by a number of readers.

When contacted Police Scotland confirmed they were appealing for witnesses following the theft of Christmas lights from a grave at Newmonthill which occurred between Sunday, December 14 and Sunday, January 4

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “We urge people to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
