Club’s role in community

The chairman of Forfar Athletic Football Club is hoping Saturday’s historic victory over Rangers will tempt more supporters back to Station Park.

The whole town was buzzing on Saturday as Forfar welcomed Rangers for the first round of the League Cup - with Rangers crashing out of the cup thanks to a Gavin Swankie double.

Club chairman Alastair Donald described the Loons’ victory as “a great day for the club and for the town.”

He was particularly delighted for those who have given so much of their time over the years and said the victory was for them.

He told the “Dispatch”: “This has been a great start for us and we now have to build on it and take the impetus into the new season. I hope those who are basking in Forfar’s little bit of glory will come along and support us again.

“I think a football club like Forfar Athletic should be the centre point of the community; it should be the focus of everybody’s second Saturday. I’m not expecting people to turn up in their thousands but if we can put 100 or 150 on the gates then you have no idea what that would do to this football club.”
