The groundwork has begun in earnest to clear the way for the new £33 million Forfar Community Campus at Forfar Academy.

The bulldozers moved on to the site, gaining access off the Kirriemuir Road, and workmen have been making steady progress on the playing fields near the perimeter fence.

The new campus to replace Forfar Academy will incorporate a state-of-the-art secondary school, a new swimming pool and sports facilities for use by the school and the wider community.

Phase one of the project will include the construction of the new campus building.

The demolition of old school buildings and external works, including the provision of new car parking and a synthetic sports pitch, will form Phase 2 of the project.

The new facility is being developed by Angus Council in partnership with the East Central Territory Hubco ‒which has been established to cover the Tayside, Fife and Central areas and is used to deliver community projects of this nature.

The provisional timescale for the campus will see work on the campus structure begin in April with the new building available in August 2016.

All works are due to be completed early in 2017.

The sports facilities at the new campus will replace those currently on offer at Forfar Swimming Pool and the Lochside Leisure Centre.

A council spokesperson said: “The contract for the Forfar Community Campus project is at an advanced stage with tender costs agreed.

“To ensure the project remains on programme, an advanced works contract has commenced for work to begin on site.”
