Two Forfar students helped Dundee College sweep the board at the recent hair and beauty festival where they and their classmates proved a cut above the opposition.
Gail Smith, HNC fashion make-up, and second year hairdresser, Leigh Jannetta were members of the Dundee College team which won a total of 15 awards at the recent North East Scotland Hair and & Beauty Festival in Aberdeen.
Gail, who works in Snips Salon, Letham, was particularly successful at the event, brushing off the opposition to win the trainee make-up artist of the year award.
The Forfar Academy merited the coveted award by gaining most points in the event from two other categories – winning the cover girl contest, and clinching bronze position in the fantasy make-up section.
Leigh, a Saturday assistant at Amanda, East High Street, who also attended Forfar Academy, took second place in the commercial day style competition. Both students were absolutely delighted to be placed among the award winners.
“I’ve never won anything before so was completely blown away when my work was judged so highly,” said Gail.
A sentiment echoed by Leigh who is also a first-time winner.
“Just taking part was really exciting, to come home with a medal was really thrilling,” said Leigh.
The students had a long wait before they could show off their skills as the competition was postponed from the end of November last year when the bad weather meant that the festival could not go ahead.
“It has been well worth waiting, however, to see the range of awards that our students have won.” commented lecturer Wendy Wigley who travelled with the Dundee College team.
Pam Imrie, hairdressing and beauty therapy curriculum manager, was also full of praise for the students.
“Dundee College students won a total of 15 awards – more than the next three colleges put together, we are all thrilled to see this success,” said Pam.
