Cash boost for community groups

CHRISTMAS has come early for a number of local voluntary organisations in the Forfar and Kirriemuir area.

Some £19,743 has been awarded to local groups in the latest round of allocations from Angus Council’s community grant scheme, and a further £4,499 from the event fund.

Among the local recipients is the Angus Pony Club which has received £1,000 for equipment and the hire of training facilities. The 1st Dunnichen Scouts received £4,997 for toilet upgrading at Letham Scout Hall and Age Concern, Kirriemuir has received £1,068 for kitchen equipment. All these awards were made under the Community Grant Scheme awards.

An Event Fun award of £2,000 has gone to the Kirriemuir Pantomime Group to cover hall hire costs.

This brings the total investment in local community projects from the community grant scheme to almost £121,000 so far in the 2012/13 financial year, just over 70 per cent of the available budget. The council has approved 50 of the 70 applications received.

Just under £11,000 of the event fund budget has been allocated to 14 applicants; just over 28 per cent of the £40,000 available. The council’s infrastructure services convener Mairi Evans said: “Community grants have been awarded to organisations in every council ward, with the Montrose and Carnoustie wards being the most enthusiastic and successful applicants, each receiving around £17,700 so far this year. This is the first year of the event fund which offers not for profit organisations funding to support them to organise events which bring positive spin-offs for Angus.

“While many groups have been successful many more could apply and enjoy the same benefit, and the same goes for the event fund, which offers support with those event costs which carry a direct charge from the council. I’d urge any group to speak to our external funding team before applying as they can steer you through the process – even if it turns out that your group isn’t eligible for a community grant they can advise on other sources of funding.”
