A special member of the Guide Dogs team has been revealed as the charity prepares to celebrate its Golden Anniversary in Forfar.

Bridie, a three-month old Golden Retriever cross Labrador, has been named especially to celebrate the charity’s major milestone and will truly become the community’s guide dog in the months ahead.

The charity is launching a £5,000 fund-raising drive, culminating in a celebratory Fun Day on September 19, to help sponsor Bridie through her training.

Logan Anderson, training school manager, said: “The support of local people was instrumental in Guide Dogs coming to Forfar half a century ago and over the decades their generosity has been unwavering.

“In recognition of the support from Forfar, we’ve decided to combine the two by naming our special golden anniversary puppy, Bridie.”

The original Guide Dogs training centre, on Dundee Road, was opened on July 19, 1965 by HRH Princess Alexandra who also, in 2008, opened the new flagship training school in Orchardbank Business Park. Since then, the community’s support has remained steadfast

Logan added: “It costs around £50,000 to train and support each dog throughout its working life, and Guide Dogs receives no government funding for this service, which relies entirely on public generosity. We’re calling on the people of Forfar to continue backing us through our golden anniversary, and continue making a life-changing difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people.”
