A SERVICE to mark the importance of the weaving industry to Forfar was well supported on Thursday night in Forfar East & Old Parish Church.
The minister, the Rev. Barbara Ann Sweetin, arranged the words, poems and praise, while Weaver Deacon Ron Scrimgeour illustrated the history of the craft in this area from a cottage craft to modern industry with a catalogue of photos on the media screens.
Bill McLaren, local baker and Deacon Convener of the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee, looking resplendent in his blue, fur-trimmed robes, along with Helen Oswald, Angus Provost, ceremonially cut a cake specially made for the occasion.
Along with councillors and many retired weavers and mill workers, they enjoyed a nostalgic look back at the past through a display of books, tools, samples and exhibits laid out round the church, the work of many local collectors.
