Public phone boxes could become a thing of the past in Scotland.
This week, BT announced plans to remove a third of Scotland’s payphones.
More than 60 phone boxes in Angus are earmarked for closure.
The firm says there are nearly 4800 payphones across Scotland and it is in the process of consulting on the removal of around 1500 of them.
In November 2003 (the oldest year BT has on record) there were 6,962 public telephones in Scotland.
BT says over the last year, fewer than five calls were made from 1,280 Payphones across Scotland with no calls at all made from more than 700 kiosks.
A BT spokeswoman said: “BT is committed to providing a public payphone service, but with usage declining by over 90 per cent in the last decade, we’ve continued to review and remove payphones which are no longer needed.
“Any removal of payphones is carried out in strict adherence to the Ofcom guidelines and, where appropriate, with the consent of local authorities.
“In all instances where there’s no other payphone within 400 metres, we’ll ask for consent from the local authority to remove the payphone. Where we receive objections from the local authority, we won’t remove the payphone.
“As an alternative to removal, we will continue to actively promote our Adopt a Kiosk scheme to all councils whilst being committed to maintaining the payphones that remain.
“Around 155 of our red payphone kiosks have now been adopted by their communities in Scotland through our Adopt a Kiosk programme.”
She said there are 134 payphones across the Angus Council area and BT is consulting on the removal of 66 of them as follows, adding no calls were made from 25 of these kiosks in the last 12 months:
