Kirriemuir hairdresser Paul Soutar will reach new heights for his birthday celebrations next month - by climbing Mount Kiliminjaro.
Paul will tackle the highest mountain in Africa as part of an expedition with Action Challenge UK to scale the 5895 metre peak in Tanzania.
His efforts will raise funds for three charities close to his heart - Motor Neurone Disease, Juvenile Diabetic Research and Down’s Syndrome Scotland.
The local businessman has funded the trip himself so any money raised will be split between the three.
Paul explained climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was on his ‘bucket list’ of things he wants to do in his lifetime.
He said: “I decided to start the list after my old school friend Sarah Gilmour sadly passed away last year from MND and I thought life is far too short.
“Last year I went to Peru and Machu Picchu; now I’m climbing Kilimanjaro. I’m self funding the climb, however many of my clients asked if I was doing it for charity so I decided I would.
“I chose MND in memory of Sarah; Juvenile Diabetic Research in memory of Claire Taylor, whose family are loyal customers - Claire sadly passed away a few years ago aged 17; and Down’s Syndrome Scotland as I am inspired by Lewis Duncan, the son of one of my stylists Dawn Stephen and her partner, Craig Duncan.
“So far I have raised over £2100 through sponsor forms, donation tins and a Christmas raffle.
“I am very grateful to everyone who has donated and for the help of my family, staff and friends.
“I am really looking forward to the challenge and experience and will then be planning the next adventure.
“I will be going up Kilimanjaro on February 10 aged 43 and coming down aged 44 as I will have my birthday half way up on February 14.”
Sponsor forms are available in the salon in Reform Street, Kirriemuir, telephone 01575 575331.
