A new book on the early literary career of JM Barrie will be launched in Kirriemuir later this month.
Entitled ‘ Myths and the Mythmaker’, the book will go on sale from the Angus Fine Arts Gallery at 5.15 pm on Friday, February 25.
The book, by Dr Ronnie Jack, Emeritus Professor of Scottish and Medieval Literature, debunks the myth that Barrie was no more than a whimsical sentimentalist writer of kailyard tales, and a minor playwright, fixated on his mother and defined by the early death of his brother.
It examines in depth Barrie’s notes from his Edinburgh University honours degree course in Literature, his many articles for The Nottingham Journal, his early plays, especially ‘The Little Minister’ and the various literary routes which led to ‘Peter Pan.
Additionally, the publishers Rodopi will be offering ‘Myths and the Mythmaker’ at the discount price of £43 until Friday, March 25. Copies (thereafter £60) may be inspected and ordered as well as purchased at the launch.
