An Angus-based Scout Group will be refurbishing its Scout hut after winning £5000 in a national competition.

The 2nd Kirriemuir Group was awarded the money as part of the OneFamily Foundation Community Awards, run twice-yearly to provide life-changing sums to organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The money will enable the group to renovate its main hall, providing a modern space for more than 120 children to enjoy.

The group was nominated for a Community Award by Karen-Ruth Phillips, a OneFamily customer, who was previously the group’s chairman.

Karen-Ruth said: “We’re very grateful to have been awarded the funding as it will enable us to create a safer and more modern space that all the children can enjoy. The majority of the money will go towards replacing the old lighting with low energy LED bulbs, helping us to reduce carbon emissions and lower our energy bills.”

The Community Awards are run by the OneFamily Foundation, an organisation set up by financial mutual, OneFamily, to redistribute a proportion of its profits to help its customers, their families and local communities.

Karl Elliott, marketing director, said: “As one of the main providers of out of school activities in the area, the 2nd Kirriemuir Scout Group is an essential part of the local community; we hope the money will help the group continue to provide activities for young people for many years to come. Our Community Awards are designed to benefit the causes closest to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.” Visit www.onefamily.com/your-foundation/community-awards
