Angus MP Mike Weir is one of the founding members of a new parliamentary all party group on Fruit Farmers which was launched this week.

The aim of the group is to represent to government the particular issues that face fruit farmers.

Commenting on the move Mr Weir said: “Fruit farming contributes a huge amount to the UK economy, estimated to be in the region of £108billion a year. In Angus the soft fruit industry is a major part of our economy, and accounts for a very large part of the soft fruits produced in the UK.

“The object of the new group is to look at the major issues facing the sector and press government for action to ensure that it remains successful.

“There are clearly major issues as negotiations continue over the UK’s exit from the European Union, not least as to what access the industry would have to European markets and, crucially, what, arrangement will be made in respect of those from other European nations who are currently employed in the industry.”
