Amazing year for showjumper

IT HAS been an amazing year for showjumper Lucy Guild and Titi D’Oase, which is in no small part due to their Young Riders of Great Britain Championship win at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

The win follows her success at the European Championships in Portugul in July when Lucy was placed fourth individually and best of British as well as winning team bronze.

She said: “It was unbelieveable [to win at HOYS]. It’s been a very good year for us and things have just got better and better.

“At the start of the year we were picked for the Nations Cup team in Belgium and Germany where we were best of British then the selectors chose us for the Europeans in Portugual.

“When we got back it was a case of getting back home and chilling for a few weeks before getting ready for HOYS and taking part in a few National competitions.”

The competition success will be even more poingnant for Lucy as she brought on Titi D’Oase from a youngster by herself. She said: “I got him as a seven year old when he hadn’t done much and was really inexperienced. The people I got him from said he had a naughty side and could be semi-dangerous at times.

“I got him on loan to begin with but I fell in love with him so I bought him. I was only really looking for a horse to do 1.30m competitions with here in Scotland - nothing nearly as good as him.

“I was a Pony Club rider before and we’ve really brought each other on and we have a good bond now.”

Lucy spent some time on John Whittaker’s yard earlier this year in order to be nearer the bigger shows down south. Although she says she learnt a lot from him in the ten or eleven months she was there it is Scottish-based Douglas Duffin who has helped her through most of her career.

She said: “Out of everyone I really appreciate Douglas, since I’ve been back he’s helped me out a lot and it was him who helped me down at HOYS.”

Next up for Lucy and Titi D’Oase will be the Scottish Premier Show in preparation for the international event at Olympia later in December. Lucy said: “I’m quite confident about Olympia, I’m really looking forward to it.”
