All set for final outdoor market

Fresh seasonal produce is the order of the day at the Angus Farmers Market in the Myre, Forfar this Saturday.

Antonia from Myreside organics will have a selection of greens, including bags of spinach and Swiss chard.

If you are unsure how to prepare anything at the market you can ask the stallholder for tips on how to cook their products.

The stem of the chard is often steamed and served separately.

The leaves cook quicker than the stem and can be used like spinach added to soups, omelettes or tarts.

The stem and the leaves can be sautéed with butter, cream and cheese.

The change in the weather affects many crops relying on the warmth of the sun to ripen them but hopefully the first of the local strawberries will be available in small quantities, so the early bird may be lucky.

Two new products are available this month. Hubertus Game have a mixed game kebab made from partridge, pheasant, wild boar and venison and Devenick Dairy have a delicious new “Mealie” oatcake the perfect partner for one of their delicious cheeses. The market also has a selection of non food stalls, including hand-crafted herbals.

As from June 9 the Forfar market will move to a new indoor site in the new Strathmore Hall at the Mart in John Street, Forfar.

Organisers are excited about the opportunities this will bring to customers and stall-holders and look forward to seeing customers old and new.
