£155,000 cost of access office flit

PLANS to relocate the Kirriemuir Access Office to Kirriemuir Police Station could take a major step forward on Thursday (tomorrow), writes Alan Ducat.

Angus neighbourhood services committee will meet in Forfar, when they will be informed that the cost of the flit will be in the region of £155,000.

The proposal is to refurbish the ground floor of the Kirriemuir Police Station to provide an access/cash area, shared interview rooms, stores, a plant room, an accessible toilet, a unisex toilet, a shared staffroom/kitchen and an area for the police museum.

Costs exclude the fitting out of the police museum, which is to be carried out and funded by Tayside Police, who will also be responsible for all costs involved in relocating their operation to the first floor.

Recurring costs of the police station would be shared between Tayside Police and Angus Council, with Angus Council generating a saving of around £26,000 a year for the access service, providing a suitable alternative use of the current access office can be found once it is vacated.

“There will also be savings in running costs for Tayside Police as a result of this project,” the report going before Angus neighbourhood service committee on Thursday explains.

Members will also be warned that, while the project has its merits in terms of the shared services/joint working agenda, there remains a sizeable financial risk for the local authority until such time as an alternative use for the current access office can be confirmed because of the leased nature of that building.

“A key driver of the project is to assist with rationalising the council’s property assets,” officials point out.

“In this regard, approval of this project would leave the current access office in Kirriemuir vacant.

“The property is leased by Angus Council on a lease term running until July 2020.”

Neighbourhood services committee members will be asked to note that the council’s corporate asset management group will be further reviewing and examining the main property estate in the Kirriemuir and Forfar areas in the very near future.

The review will cover a range of properties and will include, for example, the access office and Fairlie House.

It is intended that the outcome of this review will be reported to members before the summer recess and will specifically include options for the re-use of the access office once it becomes vacant.
