Worldwide walk for local ladies in Kirriemuir

A group of ladies from local Woman’s Rural Institutes (WRI) have taken part in an annual worldwide event to promote their cause.

More than 50 ladies took part in the internation ‘Women Walk the World’ event on April 29 organised by the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW).

The turnout was representative of almost half of the WRI’s in Angus.

The ladies enjoyed a pleasant walk from Kinnordy Loch to Kirriemuir via ‘The Den’.

‘Women Walk the World,’ is now an annual event in countries all round the globe to promote ACWW and to raise funds for the organisation.

ACWW is the world’s largest international women’s charity and its aim is to improve the well-being of women and children in under-developed countries.

Projects include health, welfare and food production.

After sharing a picnic lunch in Kirriemuir Church Hall the Angus walkers were provided with a welcome cup of tea by members of Kirriemuir Rural Institute.

ACWW World President, Mrs May Kidd, of Kirkbuddo by Forfar provided an address to the walkers.

More than £300 was raised by the walkers for the organisation.

Although the grand total for this year’s event has not yet been announced it is hoped it will have proved as successful as last year.

In 2012 over £40,000 was raised.

The organisation as it is now known was formed in Stockholm in 1933 and now includes ladies from rural communities through its 450 Member Societies in over 70 countries.
