LAST Tuesday, 41 members of Forfar Probus Club welcomed Jim Patterson, now retired in Forfar, who gave a fully illustrated talk on the various roles of an Environmental Health Officer and Meat Inspector in NE Fife.
Jim recounted visits to premises and homes throughout the area, checking on public health and food safety, whether in restaurants, food shops, swimming pools or at major annual events such as Leuchars or the Lammas Fair.
He detailed the problems of waste management- recycling, landfill, fly-tipping, asbestos and pollution, whether in water or air and the nuisance of noise.
Jim showed some quite gruesome pictures of bad management in food shops and kitchens where sell-by dates had been ignored and basic training in hygiene was lacking.
In proposing the vote of thanks, past president Les Craib asked members to show their appreciation for Jim and the teams of people like him who keep a watch on our health and safety every day of the year.
