Politically charged
THE CRITICALLY acclaimed production My Name is Rachel Corrie will be at Dundee Rep Theatre Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 6.
First staged in April 2005 at the Royal Court Theatre, London this politically charged production won multiple awards and comes to Dundee Rep as part of a UK tour.
On March 16, 2003, Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American, was killed by an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza Strip as she was trying to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes. This one-woman play is composed from Rachel’s own journals, letters and emails - creating a portrait of a messy, skinny, articulate, Salvador Dali-loving chain smoker, who left her home in Olympia, Washington, “to support non-violent resistance to Israel’s military occupation.”
Rachel’s writings were edited by British actor Alan Rickman and Guardian editor Katharine Viner.
Director Ros Philips said: “Rachel Corrie is a piece of verbatim theatre. The text is taken from her journal entries, lists, postings on the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) website, even answerphone messages she sent to her mother and father in her home town of Olympia, Washington.
“She was a poet, student and activist. This play has condensed her vibrant, passionate, constructive life into the story of an idealist killed by an Israeli military unity (IDF). Rachel wrote vociferously and had a hunger for the truth which led to her political convictions.
“I think the notion of idealism is an uncomfortable one for an audience but through Rachel’s writing we can examine how idealism contributes to politics and society today.”
Actor Mairi Phillips said: “It’s an absolute joy to have the opportunity to play a role written by a young woman who was so passionate, and determined to stand up for what she believed in.”
