BRILLIANT POETRY IS BACK
AFTER a hugely successful poetry and music event for National Poetry Day last October, Brilliant Poetry is back with a new event for April 2010.
It will take place on Friday, April 23 in the Links Hotel, Montrose and will feature Don Paterson, Helena Nelson and Andy Shanks.
One of Scotland's most successful living poets, Don Paterson currently stays in his home city of Dundee.
Once a professional musician but now a teacher at St Andrews University, he has won most of the major British poetry prizes including the TS Eliot prize (twice), the Whitbread Poetry Award and the Forward Poetry Prize (once for Best First Collection and once the overall prize).
Published by Faber & Faber, Paterson has several original collections of poetry to his name as well as two hilariously harsh books of aphorisms (witticisms or funny truths), poetry translations and a selection of Robert Burns (with introduction by Paterson).
His latest book of poems 'Rain' (2009) has been receiving excellent reviews from critics and readers and whilst he will be reading poems for the most part on April 23, he may well agree to play his guitar too.
Most budding poets in Scotland will know Helena Nelson because she runs HappenStance Press (one of the best known publishers of small poetry chapbooks, or pamphlets, in the country).
However as well as a publisher and teacher in Fife she is a very accomplished poet with a book 'Starlight on Water' (Rialto 2003) and a chapbook of humorous 'Unsuitable Poems'(2005) from her own HappenStance Press. Helena is a very experienced performer of her own work and is very, very amusing.
There will also be music from Andy Shanks, known to many Montrosians as a local teacher who is also a very talented and successful songwriter (songs of his have been used, for example, by English folk superstar June Tabor on her CD 'Apples'). Andy will perform some of his own material at this event.
Once again the evening will be hosted by local poet Rachel Fox (who is also organising this event).
Tickets, priced 4 in advance or 5 on the door, are available from Henry Hogg's (Montrose), Pucci's (Montrose), Hillside Village Shop (by Montrose) or by email from author@crowd-pleasers.net
