AFRICAN CHOIR IN ARBROATH
THE internationally acclaimed African Children's Choir will be performing at the Old & Abbey Church in Arbroath this Friday at 7.30 pm.
The choir is made up of 23 South African children, aged seven to 11, all of whom have lost a parent through poverty or AIDS.
The concert will include a selection of children's songs, gospel tunes and spirituals and, through their music and dance, the choir brings Africa alive for its audiences.
Admission costs 5 for adults and 1 for under-16s and there will be a collection to support education, care and emergency relief programmes.
Ray Barnett, founder of the choir said: "The children in the choir represent millions of children in Africa.
These children are bright, articulate and motivated to realise their potential.
"We believe that when audiences see Africa through their eyes they will want to help us give these children every opportunity to succeed in their home countries."
The first choir was formed in 1984 and each year a new choir is created, with the previous year's singers returning home to attend school.
Their education is wholly funded with the income the choir generates. Since its inception, the choir has established schools and funded scholarships in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.
