ACRYLIC ART ON DISPLAY AT STONEHAVEN
EXPERIMENTAL acrylic paintings by Ken Stewart features in a new exhibition which runs in the lower gallery at John A. W. Briggs of Stonehaven until this Saturday.
Entitled Experimental Acrylic Painting, it features the work of Ken Stewart following the RSA spring exhibition in Edinburgh.
Graduating with a diploma in art and design in ceramics and sculpture from Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, Ken went on to a career in the oil industry, but his interest in materials and processes has led to success in a variety of fields.
It was during a spell in the Congo that he first started painting in acrylics.
Using acrylic on canvas and painting on a huge scale, he drew inspiration for his work from the rich plant life.
The vivid colours and strong sense of form have produced some striking images.
After returning to Scotland last year he found inspiration during a working trip to Cape Wrath and the north west.
The experimental aspect of the exhibition title comes from the manipulation and combination of a range of media: acrylic paint, nylon, latex, Lexan polycarbonate, hessian, cotton thread, sand, soap and resin, to name a few.
By pushing these materials into areas not originally designed for, he aims to produce texturally fascinating canvases of infinite interest.
