Like everyone else in Forfar, the Dispatch takes a holiday and we will ask you to note that there will be no issue on July 27.

We will be back the following week, however, when we hope to be able to report a continuation of the good weather we have been having over the past week.

The decision by William Low & Co., Ltd., to fill the void left by Safeway Foods and develop a £1.25 million supermarket at the former Manor Works came as a welcome tonic in an otherwise bleak week.

The Dundee-based supermarket was quick to fill the vacuum and their plans to establish a sales area of between 12,000 and 15,000 square feet will mean 50 new jobs.

One question remains unanswered, however. What will happen to the east wing which is listed as a 19th century building of special architectual interest?

Angus District Council had been keen, initially, with the Safeway proposals because there was a guarantee that the property could be released and used for sheltered housing.

Angus District libraries and museums department is now midway through its summer programme of minibus tours and guided walks and organisers are delighted with the response so far.

The minibus tours to Glens Clova and Prosen, the castles of Angus and Celtic churches have all been a success and there are still two further tours.

Four leg-weary local walkers conquered the West Highland Way earlier this year.

Bob Smart, John Fairley and Ed and Dave Falconer covered the 95-mile walk in April.

They made the four-day trek to raise £1,564 for the Matthew Masson Memorial Fund.

The money will go to the £10,000 target for the Special Care Baby Unit at Ninewells.

Jus-Tina Knitwear, run by Christina Chisholm from her home at the Old Manse has just expanded to include a new mail order venture. The scheme launched in Perth and has proved successful.
