A vision of hope transformed to despair is the subject of Utopia 886742 – the latest production from a group of 15 HNC acting and performance students at Dundee College.
This devised piece was created by the students themselves when they looked at the concept of the imaginary perfect social system, examining films and literature alluding to the subject.

The resultant production tells the story of a group of young people who decide that being happy must be closer to a Utopian existence than being miserable, so establish a club where the only rule of membership is to remain smiling.

By texting 'Utopia' using the keys 886742 (hence the title), members join up and soon numbers begin to swell until the club becomes a national phenomenon.

However, as in so many tales of a perfect existence, the imagined Utopia soon becomes a dystopia, with schools of perfection training women in compulsory cooking and housekeeping and anyone who stops smiling being 'treated' by 'clown doctors'.

The founding members begin to fall out and rebel factions organise an uprising.

"Basically the Utopian elements only work as long as you keep smiling – you daren't stop," explains guest lecturer John Mitchell who is directing the piece.

John was very impressed with the students' efforts.

"The students' commitment and hard work was quite inspiring with everyone contributing ideas.

"Although there is a strong narrative element in Utopia 886742, being a devised piece the production is peppered with choreographed routines!"

Utopia 886742 takes place at The Space on Friday and Saturday, November 28 and 29, curtain up, 7.30pm, bar opens 7pm.

Tickets (£6 and £4 conc.) are available from The Space Box Office, phone (01382) 834934.
