LOCAL residents have been evacuated as a result of a blaze at lunch-time today at the Glengate Garage in Kirriemuir, during which one man was slightly injured.
Emergency services in Tayside were called to a fire at the commercial garage shortly after 1pm which has led to the evacuation of a number of residents in the area.

A huge pall of smoke could be seen from miles around as the blaze was brought swiftly under control.

Tayside Police have confirmed a 100-metre exclusion zone has been set up around the scene in Glengate, due to there being an oxy-acetylene cylinder within the garage.

The road closed signs at the Glengate during the garage blaze drama.

It is expected the exclusion zone will remain in place for at least 24-hours and traffic is being directed away from the area.

One man was slightly injured as a result of the incident and he was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

A rest centre has been set up at Webster's High School in Kirriemuir for any residents who are unable to stay with friends or family, whilst the exclusion zone is in place.

Residents required to leave their homes were advised to take additional clothing with them, as well as any medicine and essential belongings that they might need whilst during the evacuation.

It is understood that around 80 households are affected in streets including Glengate, Gordon Park, Park Place and Whiteside.

Updates to those residents affected will be given by police officers in the area and will also be broadcast via local radio.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
