KIRRIEMUIR Heritage Trust chairman Roland Proctor welcomed Ann Butler, tourism officer for Angus Council, to the group's June meeting.
The Mile Hill Airtricity wind turbines proposal was discussed, as was the Kirriemuir Heritage Trail project currently being undertaken in partnership with Angus Council cultural services.

Treasurer Charlie Knight (01575 573151) reported that resp
onse so far to the trust's promotional flyers had been encouraging, and donations (mostly gift-aided) were being received from people keen to support the trust's aims and activities.

Trustees will be distributing flyers widely in coming weeks as part of an awareness-raising exercise. Annual membership costs only £5 and provides reduced ticket admission to all trust events, as well as essential core funding for the trust's activities.

So far 56 people have signed up, but 100 is seen as the core requirement to keep the trust viable.

Two social events are currently being planned.

First a family barbecue and picnic, open to all, at Balnaboth, Glen Prosen, on the afternoon of Sunday, July 27, the birthday of the most senior trustee, Ernest Grant. It will be preceded by a family service in Glenprosen Church. Tickets, which are £10 per car or £2.50 per person, can be obtained from the Treasurer.

Fun, games and a nature trail are promised at this favourite holiday retreat of Sir J. M. Barrie.

The second event is a coffee morning, organised by Frances Havenga, in Kirriemuir and the Glens Old Parish Church hall on the morning of Saturday, September 20.

Forward plans include the creation of a Kirriemuir Heritage Trust website, and the publication of two books.

Sandra Affleck, David Orr and other local history researchers will contribute gratis to the trust's first publication about the Kirriemuir which Barrie knew and loved.

It is hoped this will be on sale in time for the 2008 Christmas market, and generate significant ongoing income for the trust thereafter.

The second is being produced at his own expense by the renowned Scottish country dance creator, Rob Sargent, to accompany the commemorative reel he has created, "Sir J. M. Barrie of Thrums".

It will go on sale in April 2010, by which time the dance will have been taught to youngsters around the world, ready for performance worldwide at noon on May 8, 2010. Profits from this book will be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The next trust meeting takes place in the Airlie Arms Hotel's Thistle Room at 7.30 pm on Wednesday, July 23.

The secretary, Martin Mckay, can be contacted in the evenings only, on 01575 574121 or mkmckay2000@yahoo.co.uk.
