THE people of Forfar and the surrounding area showed their support for service personnel past and present on Sunday, when they gave a rousing reception to a parade through the town which marked the first national Armed Forces Day.
The parade, led by the pipes and drums of the Dundee & Angus Battalion of the Army Cadet Force, mustered in the grounds of Chapelpark School, before making its way to the Myre via East High Street and Castle Street.

Marching behind the band were detachments from HMS Montrose and 45 Commando Group - both of whom have the Freedom of Angus - and they were followed by veterans bearing the colours of all the Angus branches of the Royal British Legion (Scotland) and representatives of ex-service associations.

On arriving at the Myre, which was already packed with people attending the continental market and funfair, the parade was given a spontaneous and hearty round of applause.

Special attention was given to the veterans of The Black Watch - whose successors are currently serving in Afghanistan and whose unique identity may once again be under threat - and the Royal Marines whose tour of duty there ended only recently.

The salute was taken by Lord Dalhousie, Deputy Lieutenant of Angus, and the Provost of Angus Ruth Leslie Melville.

After the parade, more than 20 local ex-service personnel, including former members of the Land Army and Timber Corps, were presented with their Veteran's Badges.
