WE'RE LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH AN ACTIVE MUSEUM

Sir, The article in a recent Dispatch about the Forfar witches may have given your readers the impression that we felt there was little information in the museum about the witches.

We would like to correct that misunderstanding and say that, personally, we think we are very lucky in Forfar to have such an active museum.

The museum does house a small permanent display about the witches.

What we were attempting to say was that we felt it was a great pity that the deplorable way in which these ladies were treated is not marked by a piece of public art.

Much of Forfar's incredible history, both factual and mythical, goes unrecorded for the every day person.

It is hard from our street art to believe that Scots kings and queens once stayed here.

The old street names of Forfar give a real sense of its history and we feel it would be great if that could be mirrored by more material works, similar to Dundee's dragon or the Angel of the North (but that might be a bit ambitious).

Ireland has used such work to focus and enhance their tourist industry with works for example like Molly Malone in Dublin and Cu Chulainn at Kildare. But more importantly these works create a sense of civic pride and understanding for the local population.

As to the role of the Meffan, in this regard we can only be complimentary. There are few towns of this size with as regular a turnover of good exhibitions, which range from shows of new and young artists to collections of the more established, and closing each year with the Christmas show.

To be able to call in and view new works is a privilege and of course a pleasure. Long may they continue to provide us with such facilities.

Yours etc.,

Marie and Mark Cashley,

Forfar (via e-mail).
