FREE DRINK JUST FOR A BIT OF FUN!

Sir: Re advert which appeared on the back page of Dispatch on June 10 - a free drink for every customer every time a goal is scored against England in the group stage of the World Cup.

Management at The Plough apologise if anyone has any ill-feeling about our World Cup promotion as being anti-English, as it is just intended a fun as we don't actually expect England to concede any goals against USA, Slovenia and Algeria.

I'd guess we probably have more English born regulars in The Plough pro rata than most as many come a little farther specifically for the real ales.

We are stocking Marston's English Pale Ale with its St. George's cross logo for the occasion. Whether the locals support England or their opposition, we are just offering a wee incentive for football fans to enjoy the games – win, lose or draw. We fully expect that English born footie fans will enjoy watching a 3-1 win over Algeria at The Plough with a complimentary drink into the bargain!

With England expected to qualify from the Group Stage, we intend to run "a drink for every goal scored by xxxxxxx (specified England player)" in the knockout stages.

On the licensing side, we only allow a customer to have one complimentary drink per day and issue vouchers for return visits should the unthinkable happen and England concede more than one goal in any game.

Personally, I hope England do well. I'm not sure if I'd want them winning it though!

Yours etc.,
