BUSTLING CENTRE WITH STORE CLOSED
Sir, Today (June 16) has been a great day for Castle Street and the High Street in Forfar. The town centre was busy and vibrant with shoppers. Why was this different from most other days? Because Tesco's was closed!
Unfortunately they had some power problems which forced them to close. The streets in Forfar in recent months have been deserted and it takes an incident like this to bring to our attention the damage these large supermarkets are doing to our town centres.
Forfar has large variety of small independent shops which rely on local customers as well as visitors to the town.
This only emphasizes the fact that we do not need another large supermarket in Forfar as we already have five and to bring another would completely empty the town centre as well as close at least one of the others.
Yes, they may bring jobs, most of them part-time where the employees do not pay national insurance or tax, so they are not really helping the economy.
Then there are all the shops that would close, and inevitably they would, and all the people that would lose their jobs.
Please, before its too late, could the council look around at what has happened in other towns where they have allowed large supermarkets to take over?
They no longer have thriving high streets where people have the choice of small shops to choose from.
Yours etc.,
A concerned shopkeeper.
