BARRIE'S GIFT STILL STANDS IN STANWAY

Sir, I have recently read several articles concerning Sir James Barrie and mention has been made of his cricket team, which comprised many famous literary figures of the day.

I believe this was a sort of touring team brought together to enjoy a game of cricket with Barrie's friends.

One of the places visited by this team was the village of Stanway in Gloucestershire, where they stayed at Stanway House as guests of the late Earl of Wemyss.

I was born and brought up in Stanway and, as a boy, I was told of many long gone heroic matches between the Barrie Eleven and the local side.

I don't know how many matches were played. All this happened well before my time, but whatever the final scores were the club must have made a good impression on Sir James, as the fine timber-built pavilion, which still proudly stands at the edge of the cricket field, was gifted by Sir James Barrie.

Yours etc.,

Patrick Newman.
